WOKINGHAM United Charities (WUC) is one of the borough’s oldest charities.
A grant giving organisation, it exists to support people in need and the charities that serve them.
It makes available a number of different grants to individuals and organisations throughout the year.
Its Essential Item grant can help someone experiencing hardship to pay, for example, for a cooker or fridge, while its Relief in Need grant supports organisations working to alleviate poverty and the reasons for poverty, in the borough.
Bright Futures is another fund that helps children from low-income families to access extracurricular activities, and WUC’s Household Support fund can help struggling families to pay for food, bills and energy costs.
A School Trips fund enables youngsters to take part in residential and educational learning, and the charity’s Christmas Cheer grant helps borough charities to bring joy to people who would otherwise not be able to afford to celebrate.

WUC’s most recent funding round produced smiles in abundance as charities benefited from its Christmas Cheer grant.

A tea dance, Christmas parties, a Christmas lunch, and dozens of hampers, gifts, children’s toys, books and games, and vouchers were just some of the projects funded by the Christmas Cheer grant, and which made the festive season more joyful for many who would otherwise have struggled, or spent Christmas alone.

That WUC makes a difference is certain.

As Sue Lovell from the Grub Club said: “without their funding, I’m not sure our Christmas party would have been put on at all.”
But this gift isn’t just for Christmas.
People in need of support, and charities that support people in need, can apply to WUC for grants throughout the year.
