A WOMAN from Earley has held a double celebration to mark her 100th birthday. Florence Stewart, who lives at The Liberty of Earley House, enjoyed a special lunch on Sunday.
She was joined by relatives, including four great-grandchildren, for the celebration. And it’s not the only party she will enjoy.
On Thursday, her fellow residents at the Strand Way care home will raise a glass of pink Champagne in Florence’s honour.
Born in October 1917, Florence grew up in the Oxfordshire countryside leaving home at 16 to get a job.
She became a manager of a shop on Bridge Street, Caversham where she met husband Ronald. They married when she was 21 and their son Brian was born in 1939.
In 1961 Ronald and Florence moved to Wychwood Crescent, Earley where they spent many happy years. Florence went on to work as a manager at Heelas of Reading, now John Lewis, for 25 years.
Mrs Stewart moved into The Liberty of Earley House in 2013, and is an active member of the residents’ activities committee.
Gill Chescoe, home manager said: “Florence certainly does not look her age; she is a lovely lady and a pleasure to be around.”
