A BOROUGH repair cafe has been awarded £500 to help its members build homes.
Homes for the birds, that is.
The Repair Cafe at Lambs Lane Primary School Spencers Wood has been given the grant by The Swallowfield Horticultural Society, following their successful stand at this year’s Swallowfield Show.
Members of the repair cafe have been making bug hotels and birdboxes out of wood offcuts at their workshops for young people in the borough.
They have already built 378 birdboxes in 17 workshops this year, and have four more workshops scheduled until the of the year.
“The money will be used to buy more wood,” said repair cafe organiser Billie Bachra.
“The demand for our free workshops for young children far outstrips the amount of wood that we get donated.
“So if anyone can help us with donated wood, or support us by supplying us wood at cost price, please get in touch.”
As well as providing avian homes, the group regularly fixes the borough’s broken household items at their monthly repair cafe.
There is no charge for fixing, but the group gratefully accepts donations.
Meetings are on the third Sunday of each month.
The next repair cafe is at Lambs Lane Primary School, on Sunday, November 17, from 10am to 1pm.
