Rector of All Saints Church, The Reverend Canon David Hodgson retired at the weekend, leading his final services on Sunday after 26 years leading the parish.
Following his retirement, Mr Hodgson and his wife Lorraine, have now moved to Royal Leamington Spa.
Associate Priest at All Saints, The Reverend Hannah Higginson, said: “The weekend was a lovely opportunity to thank David and Lorraine for all that they have given over many years.
“Sunday was filled with thanksgiving and celebration, with speeches, and gifts for David and Lorraine.
“They have given years of their lives to All Saints Church, so it was lovely to be able to thank them both.
“We wanted to give them a really good send-off.”
After the service, the congregation enjoyed cakes and bubbly with the whole church family, Wokingham clergy members, friends and colleagues of David’s.
In the afternoon there was an opportunity for the wider community to say goodbye.
A tea and cake reception in the newly restored and reopened church building saw around 200 visitors drop in to express their gratitude.
Cakes were made by The Mother’s Union.
“It was an emotional, joy filled day,” said Ms Higginson.
“At the same time, it was quite surreal.
“I don’t think it has quite hit us all yet that David and Lorraine have gone.
“All Saints won’t be the same without them.
“We’re sad they’re going, and we wish them every blessing.
“But although this is a time of change, the church is still very much here for the community.
“ Our services continue each week, and everyone is welcome.”
