A new initiative that aims to encourage conversations and connections in Woodley, and throughout Wokingham Borough, is set to launch next month.
The first HelloBench will be unveiled in Woodley precinct, with additional benches planned for key locations in the area.
The concept draws inspiration from the global Friendship Bench movement, which began in Zimbabwe in 2006.
Originally created to provide mental health support, Friendship Benches have since evolved to address loneliness and social isolation in communities worldwide.
The initiative has garnered significant support from both Wokingham Borough Council and Woodley Town Council.
Key locations for the HelloBenches in Woodley will include South Lake, Woodley precinct (near Waitrose) and Woodford Park – close to the Oakwood Centre.
Residents are also being invited to suggest other locations where a HelloBench would be a welcome addition.
Aliya Musa, a Woodley resident and founder of the project. Said: “We are thrilled to have the support of our local councils.
“Their backing is vital in helping us create spaces where people can connect and combat feelings of loneliness.”
To celebrate the launch, HelloBench will host a Chat-A-Thon on Saturday, July 13, from 9am to 5pm at the new HelloBench in Woodley Precinct.
The event will feature the banner-adorned bench, where local community clubs, charities, and organisations will take turns promoting their initiatives and encouraging conversations under the theme of “connection.”
Local choirs and bands will perform throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Aliya added: “We want this event to be more than just a plaque unveiling.
“The Chat-A-Thon will highlight the vibrant community spirit of Woodley, and provide a platform for local groups to engage with residents.”
HelloBench is seeking sponsors for plaques and website set-up costs. Residents and local organisations are also invited to participate in the Chat-A-Thon, and become part of the HelloBench movement.
Volunteers, especially those with professional social media experience, are needed to help grow the initiative.
