RESIDENTS of Wokingham Borough Council have a new, eco-friendly alternative to landfill.
The council has partnered with re3 Recycling and Anglo Doorstep Collections to offer a free service that collects reusable items from residents’ doorstep.
This is intended as a convenient option for people short of time or less able to physically carry items to charity shops or recycling centres
Acceptable donations include clothes, toys, and books.
Items are carefully sorted and redistributed in the UK and around the world so that essentials can be accessed at a lower price.
The service is free to residents, and saves the council money, too.
“It costs us, the borough and taxpayers, for everything that goes into landfill,” said a council representative.
“Every item we can divert from going to landfill is a win for the environment and for our pockets.”
In addition, Anglo Doorstep Collections will donate 60% of the proceeds to a charity of the donor’s choice.
To participate in the scheme, residents are asked to book a collection time online, pack their items in a bag or box, and leave them outside on collection day.
Wokingham Borough Council hopes that by improving access to re-using and recycling, they can save money and help protect vital services around the borough.
