LAST night Wokingham Borough Council announced that it was to install CCTV on a temporary footpath in the former Paddocks car park. Today they have announced that the footpath is to be closed for two weeks.
In a statement on social media, Wokingham Borough Council said it had made the decision after carrying out a review of the area.
The temporary footpath had been installed to link the Shute End car park with Elms Road while regeneration works took place at Elms Field.
The former car park is to become housing when the scheme is completed in 2020.
Earlier this week, Thames Valley Police revealed that a woman in her 20s was raped on the footpath sometime between 3pm and 8pm on bank holiday Monday.
As a result, Wokingham Borough Council took swift action in annoucing the CCTV cameras and now to shut the footpath in order to make changes to improvements, making it safer.
The statement reads: “Following the incident on Monday in the former Paddocks car park in Wokingham, we have carried out a review of the area and footpath this morning.
“A number of potential improvements have been identified.
“These will take some time to implement and therefore we have decided to temporarily close this footpath with immediate effect for a period of up to two weeks.
“We will then undertake a further review before a formal decision is made on whether we re-open it. We will update you as soon as we can.”
