Wokingham borough mayor, Cllr Adrian Mather, has called for the council to introduce a death in service benefit for councillors.
He spoke at last month’s full council meeting, and made the passionate call following the recent death of sitting councillors Paul Fishwick and Norman Jorgsesen.
He noted how the council has no death in service benefits for councillors. When asked if it was possible, he was told by officers it would be, but would be subject to the usual process.
He asked councillors to consider, when making representations to the independent remuneration panel, whether a group life policy would be relevant.
He told Wokingham Today he was shocked and saddened that nothing was in place to help the families of councillors who die whilst serving.
