A YOUTH group has launched an urgent appeal to find a new home after it will be kicked out of its current base in March next year.
The Wokingham Air Training Corps wants Wokingham Paper readers to help them locate a temporary meeting space for its activities while new premises are being built.
The group currently meets in land by Carnival Pool in Wokingham’s town centre, but the area has been earmarked for development as part of the regeneration project. Instead, the area will become a multi-storey car park and new leisure complex.
The South East Reserve Forces Cadet Association (SERFCA), which has been based at the Wellington Road site for more than 20 years, has plans for a new facility in Elizabeth Park, in Norreys.
The new building will be constructed on the council-owned land as a condition for the cadets being moved out of the current site – however, it’s expected that the new facilities won’t be available for six months. During that time, the ATC want to find a space large enough for their meetings, which usually attract around 30 youngsters. Ideally there would be break-out rooms for group work.
Martin Lines, Officer Commanding of the Wokingham ATC, told The Wokingham Paper: “We are having new premises built but they won’t be ready for six months. We really need somewhere where we can gather together in one room. A training space plus a smaller area we can use as a classroom would be ideal, or, somewhere we could split the space up.”
“We have a budget for rent so we are happy to pay for the space. We are looking at village halls and community centre type buildings at the moment but we wanted to ask the readers of The Wokingham Paper if they knew of anywhere suitable in the greater Wokingham area.
“We currently meet each Monday and Wednesday evening between 7pm and 9.30pm but we are flexible and could change our days if we had an offer on another evening.”
