ARBORFIELD pupils have been slowing down traffic outside their school thanks to a competition to design a speed sign.
A new 20mph limit has been set up outside Bohunt School in Arborfield Green in order to increase road safety for pupils.
The competition to ‘Design Your Own Speed Limit Sign’ was run by Crest Nicholson, the developers who launched their Garden Village regeneration scheme on the former Arborfield Garrison.
The competition ran in June, with the winning design now on display along the Nine Mile Ride Extension approaching Bohunt School.
Scott Black, Managing Director of Crest Nicholson Regeneration, judged the competition ahead of Senior Site Manager Mike Rooney visiting the school to hand out the prizes in a special awards presentation.
School-girl Caitlyn was the winner, and she received a new iPad, donated by Crest Nicholson’s Build Team.
Her winning design was inspired by her favorite animal.
Caitlyn said, “I’ve always loved sloths, and I thought some speed signs are quite boring and plain, so I wanted to include my favourite animal.”
Second and third places received an MP3 player and stationery goody bag respectively.
Sammie Bryans, Development Director for Crest Nicholson, said: “Bohunt School is a very important part of our new community here at Arborfield Green and we were very pleased to be able to work with them on this activity which has a real educational benefit while supporting young people to take ownership of their community.
“The signs look great and are a brilliant way of encouraging careful driving.”
Matthew Garwell, Head of Art, added: “I was very proud to see such enthusiasm shown by our students in their inventive and creative use of both traditional and digital media in their competition entries.
“ Working on projects such as this within our local community is so important and I am so pleased that our students have risen to the challenge with exciting visual designs.
“ As our school continues to grow, I hope we have many more opportunities to celebrate the creativity and imagination of our wonderful students around this ever-growing community.”
