A BOROUGH choir treated its audience to a wide range of music at Reading’s Great Hall.
Wokingham Choral Society’s Spring Concert featured a programme of four works; a blend of favourites and not so well known pieces.
These included Gerald Finzi’s Lo the full final sacrifice, and introduced young soloists: Charlotte Bowden, soprano; Jack Harberd, tenor; and Freddie Crowley, bass.
“This was followed by Elgar’s Serenade for Strings played with sensitive elegance by the Chameleon Arts Orchestra. The first half of the concert ended with a fine performance of Mendelssohn’s Hear my prayer, with its exquisite ‘O for the wings of a dove’,” said music critic R.J.Eaglen.
The second half of the concert was devoted to a chamber orchestral version of the Requiem by French organist Maurice Duruflé, performed by Iestyn Evans.
R.J.Eaglen continued: “The setting of the Latin mass cries out for comparison with Gabriel Faure’s frequently performed version, but both works deserve to be appreciated as much for their differences as their similarities.”
Wokingham Choral Society is a group of more than 100 ‘friendly and enthusiastic singers’.
The choir has been making music in Berkshire for more than 70 years.
Their summer concert, featuring folk songs, partsongs and madrigals, will be performed at All Saints Church, Wokingham on June 15, and will be conducted by George de Voil.
