Wokingham Borough Council was forced to suspend comments on a recent social media post following what it has described as offensive comments were posted.
The post to its Facebook page noted how several users had breached its social media policy.
It added that anyone breaking the policy could have their comments deleted, risk being blocked from its pages or having the comment reported to the platform.
The post in question highlighted how roads in Wokingham Borough had been ranked as some of the best maintained in the country according to Department for Transport data.
A spokesperson for Wokingham Borough Council told Wokingham Today: “The reason we turned off commenting on that particular post was that there were a couple of comments using profanity and a couple of others that were offensive.
“We did not feel we could leave the comments open overnight while we don’t have anyone on duty to monitor them.”
The spokesperson also confirmed this was not an isolated incident.
“It happens regularly that we need to hide comments on social media due to breaches of our social media rules, but only occasionally do we find it necessary to turn off comments on a post.
“We do occasionally have to block people for repeatedly breaking the rules.”
