A GROUP of Wokingham arts enthusiasts opens its doors to visitors this month, enabling them to enjoy a free lecture.
The last of the group’s annual programme of speakers will give people a chance to try out the Arts Society Wokingham, and to discover the growing organisation.
Speaker Douglas Skeggs will talk about artist David Hockney, who left the Royal College of Art already more famous than his teachers, and showed himself to be a naturally gifted draftsman.
Hockney’s love of ingenious visual devices has led him to experiment with a range of techniques, and his charm and humour sets him apart from others of his generation.
Robin Cops from Arts Society Wokingham said: “At this final event of the season, people can come along for free to see what we enjoy each month, and to discover the high standard of the talks for themselves.
“It’s a very sociable and exciting group, and there’s a real buzz before the lectures, which are interesting, varied, and sometimes controversial.
“Usually around 120 or 130 people come each month, and we get great feedback.
“We’d love to share what we are enjoying each month with new visitors.”
Douglas Skeggs read Fine Art at Magdalene College Cambridge, lectures widely, and has written and presented various TV documentaries. Three one-man exhibitions of his paintings have been held in England and Switzerland, and he has published five novels, and a book Monet, River of Light.
Arts Society Wokingham meets on the third Monday of the month (except August and December) at King’s Academy, Binfield, in the school’s lecture theatre.
Tea and coffee is served from 7.15pm in the foyer, with lectures starting at 7.45pm.
Visitors need to pre-register to join the free event, which will take place on Monday, July 21, at King’s Academy.
