Every year, the Jones VC Trophy is awarded by Finchampstead parish council to recognise an exceptional voluntary contribution to the local community.
The award commemorates Colonel Alfred Stowell Jones, who received the Victoria Cross from Queen Victoria in 1858 for his bravery during the Indian Mutiny.
In later life, Colonel Jones and his wife lived at Ridge Cottage, Finchampstead (now the site of Dell House).
To mark their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1913, villagers presented them with a beautiful silver-gilt lidded bowl. In 1984, their granddaughter, Ruth de Courcey-Ireland, gifted this bowl to the Finchampstead Society as a perpetual trophy.
With the Society now closed, Finchampstead parish council proudly continues this tradition.
The trophy is a symbol of community spirit, selflessness, and the importance of recognising those who quietly go the extra mile for others.
The parish council invites you to nominate a person – or group of people – who has made an outstanding voluntary contribution to our community.
The nominator must be a Finchampstead resident, but the nominee(s) may live outside the parish if their voluntary work has benefitted Finchampstead.
