Even though artist Glyn Uzzell lived in Portugal he was an active member of The Chelsea Arts Club right up to his death in 2014.
The painting featured today is a small, simple abstract in vibrant colours of a landscape in acrylic on a box canvas.
It is signed to the bottom right “Uzzell” and has a label to the back indicating that this was lot number 068 in a silent auction for charity held by the Chelsea Arts Club in 2012.
The painting was bought at that auction for £160, which even then was a real bargain.
The artist, Glyn Uzzell, was born in Swindon in 1930.
His formal art studies were at the London Institute of Education and Goldsmith’s College, also in London, between 1949 and 1951. In 1957 he moved to Geneva in Switzerland to take up a teaching post at the International School there.
Uzzell was always a talented artist and won many prizes and awards for his work culminating in him being given a one-man exhibition at the city’s Mussee de l’Athenee.
By 1965 Uzzell was keen to further develop his artistic skills and decided to go to New York to study printmaking at the Art Students League with a move to Paris the following year to work under Stanley William Hayter (a friend of Pablo Picasso and a man who was thought to be one of the most innovative printmakers of his generation) at his experimental Atelier17 studio.
Two years later, he was invited to set up and run the state subsidised print workshop the Centre de Gravure Contemporaine de Geneve, which he ran for a number of years. It was whilst working in Geneva that he met his lifelong partner who was also an artist and teacher.
In 1979 they eventually set up home in a run-down former farm building in Portugal, doing all the renovating themselves.
Sadly, it was here that they were both to lose their lives when, in 2014, through no fault of their own, the building was destroyed in a serious gas explosion.
Uzzell’s works are held in many public and private collections around the world including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Museum of Art and History in Geneva, etc…
