A GROUP devoted to learning about art and artists is looking forward to a season of lectures delivered by experts in their field.
The Arts Society Wokingham, whose members share a curiosity for the arts, opens its programme in September.
Jo Walton will kick off the season with her talk about John Craxton, exploring how this highly individual painter and theatre designer combined modernity with the great British landscape tradition.
The society offers a programme of monthly illustrated lectures, and study days, and has a series of visits planned for the coming year.
This season’s lectures cover not only painting (looking at the work of artists Bruegel, Seurat and Craxton) but also sculpture, literature, Venetian luxury goods, theatre and the art and culture of ancient civilisations.
Lecturers are all authoritative and entertaining public speakers, says Sue Bryant from the group.
Talks are delivered in person but are also live-streamed to enable people to watch from home if unable to attend.
“After a most successful free lecture in July we are now about to start our new season,” said Sue.
“We’re a friendly and vibrant society, and new members and guests are always welcome.”
The group meets at King’s Academy, Binfield, on the third Monday of the month, from 7.15pm to 9pm.
There is a chance to chat with friends over tea and coffee before the talk starts at 7.45pm.
Jo Walton’s talk can be heard on Monday, September 15.
