The Wokingham Half Marathon is gearing up for a record breaking 35th year.
More than 2,400 people have already entered with many hoping to smash the course times and clinch a £500 bonus.
The race has always attracted world class athletes and is regarded as one of the fastest in the country.
However, the new organiser, Chris Sumner, says this year’s event will have more fun runners and be more of a family affair.
Chris, who has considerable experience in race organisation, and takes over from Peter Evans who has organised the race for the past 30 years.
Mr Evans retired last year, enabling the fresh new-look.
“The Wokingham Half has always been a serious run rather than just a fun one,” said Chris.
“We still want to attract the elite runners but we also want to open the race up to fun runners and the general population.”
“They help raise lots of money for local and other charities and that is something we want to encourage. We expect to see a lot of participants in fancy dress and they help make the race really fun for spectators, families and runners.
“People will notice a number of changes and a lot more colour around in the road signs, banners and signage.
“We are honoured to carry on from the great event Peter Evans and the committee organised and take this event forward.”
Starting and finishing at Cantley Park the race runs on fast, flat closed rural roads and each year produces outstanding performances.
And with the weather expected to be warmer than in previous years, it’s possible that long-held records could tumble this year.
Liz Yelling has held the woman’s course record since 2009 with 1.11.09 while Phil Wicks run of 1.03.14 for the men has stood since 2012. There is a £500 bonus prize for anyone breaking those times.
The route goes through Bell Foundry Lane which has been closed for several months but will open specially for the race which takes place on Sunday February 24.
There will be a number of road closures on the day, and the route goes into Whistley Green and Hurst, heading back to Cantley Park for a big finish.
Sponsors include David Cliff estate agents.
