FIRE crews were called to Twyford earlier this month to tackle a caravan fire.
The incident was reported at 11.25am on Sunday, June 11.
The mobile home from home was in a layby on the A4 New Bath Road, closed to Dobbies at Hare Hatch.
Crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road and Whitley Wood fire stations were sent to the scene.
Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire, and they were on the scene for around 52 minutes.
While crews were quick to put out the blaze, it took longer for the van to be removed from the scene. Residents complained on social media, with some saying they’d seen near misses as drivers sought to avoid the wreckage.
It was eventually removed by Wokingham Borough Council staff on Thursday, June 11.
Cllr Ian Shenton said: “I’m pleased to say that the caravan that was abandoned on the A4 in Twyford on Sunday, June 11, was removed first thing on Thursday morning, after we received the notification at 9.30am on Monday.
“Dumping any sort of waste at the side of a road is fly-tipping, and it’s illegal. There are proper ways to dispose of all items, including caravans.
“In this case, not only did they abandon the caravan, but they also set fire to it, which would have created dangerous fumes near the site and turned it into hazardous waste requiring specialist removal equipment.”
He added: “As well as being an eyesore and a disruption to residents, the cost of removal comes directly from council tax funds, money that could be better spent elsewhere in the borough.
“We urge anyone who has any information to get in touch with us at [email protected].”
