A group of ten people gathered in Howard Palmer Gardens, Wokingham, to mark International Conscientious Objectors Day.
Those at the gathering, on a cold day (May 15), each placed a red carnation in memory of past and current conscientious objectors imprisoned around the world for refusing to join the military.
They later went to the local Quaker Friends Meeting House where they had been invited to enjoy a warm cup of tea and piece of cake.
David Chapman, who lives in Wokingham and is a member of the Peace Pledge Union and also the Anglican Pacificist Fellowship, said:
“The vigil had been planned by a small group. Those attending were appreciative of the low key event where silence and reflection was interspersed with music and poetry, one poem written by local poet, Alan Brown. A short reflection was given by Alice Edwards, a local resident.”
