IF YOU know of a disadvantaged young person keen to take part in an after school activity, now is your chance to help them.
But hurry, because once the opportunity is gone, it’s gone, says Wokingham United Charities (WUC).
For nearly a year, the grant-giving charity has been helping youngsters in the borough to enjoy activities their families would not otherwise be able to afford, through its Bright Futures Fund.
A grant of £25,000 from Wokingham Borough Council, in partnership with the Hardship Alliance, has already enabled the organisation to provide financial support for a wide range of extracurricular activities, including school trips, club memberships, sports equipment, instrument rental purchase and participation fees.
Amy Garstang, manager at Wokingham United Charities, said: “School trips, clubs and other activities help young people make the most of the opportunities available to them through school.
“Young people shouldn’t have to miss out because of a financial situation they or their families often have no control over.”
This year, thanks to WUC’s Bright Futures Fund, young people have been able to take part in school residential trips, a summer sewing course with The Cowshed, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, mental health workshops, Beavers, Rainbows and swimming lessons, dance classes, ice skating lessons, a choir, and football.

The grant has also enabled National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) to create positive activities for young people living in care in Wokingham by giving them a chance to break away from their care setting to enjoy days out as part of its Magic Memories scheme.
Wokingham United Charities says there is still time to support a child through its Bright Futures Fund.
But the scheme will end on Monday, March 31, so referrers shouldn’t delay.
Referrals can be made online, but must come from a professional such as a teacher, youth group leader, sports trainer or relevant local charity.
Families can’t apply directly, but can ask their school or club to apply for a grant for their child on their behalf.
