The opportunity to learn more about the history and heritage of Wokingham will happen next month in the town.
Heritage Open Day is set to take place on Saturday, September 14.
Every September, thousands of organisations and volunteers across England coordinate events to celebrate our history and culture.
It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are free to explore.
A spokesperson for Wokingham town council said: “We are delighted to join this celebration, and bring Wokingham’s rich history to life.
“This September, we will be celebrating what connects us, our past and current connections which make Wokingham the place it is today.”
In Wokingham town hall, through displays and hands-on activities for children, there will be the opportunity to look at how Wokingham came to be, connections with industry, how the town has changed, how the town hall has changed in use over time, past travel connections, and more.
The Wokingham Society will be offering a guided walk through the town, highlighting historical locations and stories associated with them. Book your place in advance, to secure a place.
There will be activities outside in Howard Palmer Gardens too.
Wokingham in Bloom will be celebrating its connection with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom to mark its 60th anniversary.
Wokingham in Bloom volunteers and sponsors will be on hand to share what they get up to and help with all the children’s activities including seed planting, bird box making, bug mugs, butterfly feeders and pebble painting.
The town council is custodian of many wonderful historic artefacts and historical information, and works with many organisations across the town who are keen to tell stories and share our town’s creativity and historical wealth with residents and visitors alike.
A number of these are also participating this time.
Baptist Church
The baptist church is celebrating 250 years in Wokingham with an exhibition on Saturday, September 14, between 11am and 3pm. Displays will be around the building, along with activities for children and free tea and cake.
All Saints Church
The church is planning an exhibition to view an 1872 large scale map of Wokingham from Saturday, September 7, until Sunday, September 15, between 10am and 4pm. It is also offering tours of the church.
Wokingham Library
Wokingham library is celebrating 100 years of public library services in Wokingham, and it will be displaying information about this around this time.
Chair of Wokingham town council’s civic committee, Cllr Keith Malvern, said: “The Heritage Open Days are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of the remarkable heritage of our town.
“We hope that our residents and visitors will enjoy discovering more about our historical connections and engage with the many activities that will be on offer.”
