Twyford’s new library is set to prove how a sequel can be better than the original edition, as work continues with the aim to get it ready to open in time for May half-term.
On opening, the new library will offer visitors a delightful new space, with a large main library in the old school hall and a specially designed children’s area occupying a secondary space off the hall, which can be used to create the perfect atmosphere for events like storytelling and craft.
The library also features a new modern extension which has been designed to offer additional space and create a new accessible entrance area off Polehampton Close.
Throughout the space the designers have focused on making the most of the Grade-II listed buildings historic elements, with its high ceilings, large windows and decorative Victorian brickwork.
The brickwork has also been used to create an attractive feature for the extension where it has been left exposed and helps visually connect the historic and modern spaces into one.
Cllr Stephen Conway, leader of the council, said: “This is such an important building for the village and people have been sad watching it sit empty and start to decline for so many years.
“Moving from the old library, in its dated prefabricated building, to this new space which is full of light and interest has been a fantastic opportunity, and one which has allowed us to breathe life back into it and create an uplifting community space.
“There’s still a lot of work to be completed before the library can move into the new home, but the site is a hive of activity and our contractors, CTS, are doing a fabulous job getting it ready to open soon.
“We will be sharing more details once confirmed but our hope is to have it open by the May half-term so families can come along and try the new facility for themselves.”
With works to the roof now complete the team has now moved to completing external works, which include creating the new accessible access path to the entrance, landscaping the outdoor areas and repainting the restored window frames in green and white to match the buildings original historic colour scheme.
Internally the building continues to be restored and fitted out with spaces being plastered and decorated, final wiring works completed and carpeting to be laid down throughout.
A new platform lift is also being installed to help those with mobility issues navigate the spaces.
Once the external construction works and internal fit out works have been completed, the building will be handed over to the council’s Library service who will start installing new furniture into the space ready for the move from the old library to the new.
It is intended that the new library will be open ready for the school half-term at the end of May so families can enjoy the new space.
In order to transfer to the new library the old facility will need to close, allowing for books and other resources to be packed up and moved across to their new home.
It is expected that this will take just over a week as the team wants to minimise disruption for local library users.
During this closure, residents will be able to access library services at other locations across the borough. Loan dates will also be extended to allow residents to return borrowed items after the new library opens.
Further details about dates for the closure of the old library and opening of the new one are expected to be confirmed in early May.
In a statement, Wokingham Borough Council said: “We want to make sure our libraries are at the heart of their local community and have an active library volunteer scheme where people can get involved and help support the great activities taking place.
“Volunteer opportunities include helping to host events and activities from reminiscence groups for people with dementia, to author talks and children’s story time or craft activities.
“We also run a home library service which helps deliver books to home-bound readers, and a community library scheme to help support customers.
“With the opening of the new library at Twyford we’d love to hear from local people who might be interested in getting involved with our volunteer scheme, and also from people who may be interested in starting new clubs and activities in the space.
