ANN WAY and Gerry Luckhurst have succeeded in making 100 hats for newborns.
Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh, they have been knitting furiously to produce newborn head wear for Royal Berkshire Hospital’s maternity unit.
The Inner Wheel began in the UK in 1924, and this year celebrates its centenary.
It has become one of the largest women’s groups, with more than 100,000 members in more than 103 countries.
An initiative called 100 for 100 is helping club members to find unusual ways to mark the centenary, which prompted Ann to make 100 bonnets.
Club correspondent Sheila Thorpe, said: “This was something that Ann felt she could do.
“With help from Gerry, she has produced these 100 gorgeous little hats, which look almost edible, they’re so lovely.”
Why do newborns need hats?
We lose heat through our heads, and since babies have larger heads than children and adults, they are more at risk of getting cold.
Hospitals may be cooler environments for a newborn than inside the womb, so infant caps can help babies regulate their temperature shortly after birth.
The Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh meets at Sonning Golf Club on the third Thursday evening of every month.
The group welcomes new members to join in the fun, take part in activities, raise funds for charity and support the local community.
