POCKET-sized artworks are needed to help create a giant-sized sculpture for Wokingham.
The team behind Arts4Wokingham are planning a new postcard exhibition later this autumn, and are appealing for artists to come forward.
The mini works of art will then be sold to raise funds to promote more public art for the borough, including a new metal sculpture which will be placed outside the Carnival Hub.
Called The Arc, it is the vision of artist Nicola Anthony and will be a physical poem about the borough and the people who live and work there.
The artist has a strong pedigree, having previously created sculptures now on display in Los Angeles, Dubai, Singapore, and Ireland.
The exhibition will of postcards won’t be as grand as Ms Anthony’s sculpture as the artworks have to be on a smaller scale: submissions should be 12cm by 17.5cm.
They can be created in any media: fabric, clay, metal, print, glass are suggested.
The picture should be an original piece of art, not a copy of something else.
A spokesperson for Arts4Wokingham said: “Last year, we had over 100 cards donated from local community groups, local artists and enthusiastic country-wide artists.
“There was a great variety of work including fused glass and cards made with metal, stitched textile pictures, knitted cards, and cards using poured paint techniques.
“All the artists created something unique and special to help Arts4wokingham’s quest to raise funds and promote its arts agenda.”
The group aren’t looking for the next Picasso or Van Gogh: “You don’t have to be an artist to take part, we want everyone to feel included in this community project and enjoy taking part.”
The closing date for submissions will be the end of the month, and the exhibition will go on show in Wokingham Library on Friday, November 24, and Saturday, November 25.
“It is a superb venue close to the intended location of Arts4Wokingham’s launch project, The Arc, a stunning stainless steel sculpture created by international artist, Nicola Anthony,” the spokesperson added.
Artists can suggest the price of their creation: £10 or £20, with the higher price becoming a silent auction. Visitors can bid on the cards, with the highest offer winning the piece.
“Last year, visitors were very generous and often paid more than the price on the cards,” the spokesperson said.
