Woodley pumpkin-king Curtis Leach recorded a new personal best weight in a competition in Southampton last weekend.
The monster fruit hit 1,716 lbs (778 kgs). This was the heaviest pumpkin grown in the United Kingdom, making Curtis the UK champion for 2023.
It was also his personal best effort by more than 200 lbs.
Curtis still has some way to go to achieve British and World records. The UK record was set in 2022 at 2,656 lbs while the world record was broken last week in the United States at 2,745 lbs.
Curtis told Wokingham Today: “I also won four other classes last Saturday, so in addition to growing the two heaviest pumpkins this year I have also grown the heaviest Green squash at 591 lbs, Bushel Gourd at 151 lbs, and watermelon at 113 lbs.”
All of his giant fruits will be on display until Halloween at Wargrave Nursery Plant Centre.
