A SCHOOL in Caversham is hosting an annual gathering of music educators from around the country next week.
Queen Anne’s School will welcome 250 delegates, speakers, and professionals in in music education for three days of events and speeches.
This year chief executive and artistic director of the National Youth Orchestra, Sarah Alexander OBE, and multi award-winning, Belize-born British composer Errollyn Warren CBE are the keynote speakers.
They’ll be joined by music theorist, educator, and psychologist Adam Ockleford, Professor in songwriting Keith Ayling, composer and choral director of Clifton Cathedral David Bednall, and head of music and performing arts at United Learning Catherine Barker.
Dr Rebecca Berkley, associate professor in music education at the University of Reading is also set to give a talk.
The event includes sessions for those working in Early Years, Primary, and Secondary education, as well as a trade fair with 35 corporate partners such as instrument suppliers, publishers, technology platforms, exam boards, and touring companies.
Sessions will examine topics such as classical music in the primary classroom, composition, developing listening and rhythmic skills, musical inclusion across the spectrum of neurodiversity, and creating cultures of positive peer-influence.
Panels will discuss topics such as a national plan for music education, pathways into Higher Education, and the challenges faced by music partnerships.
Live workshops include a Stomp-style session led by Ollie Tunmer and a steel pan session with Reading’s own CultureMix Arts, as well as concerts, an informal dinner, and a quiz.
The Music Teacher’s Conference takes place at Queen Anne’s, Caversham, from Friday-Sunday, May 17-19.
