The freehold ownership of a road in Barkham has sold for £10.
The Shires, off Sandy Lane, was part of an online auction of land and property conducted on Tuesday, December 13, by Clive Emerson Land and Property Auctioneers.
It was part of a lot that also included small plots of land elsewhere in Berkshire.
The Barkham road is the latest of similar lots, including neighbouring woodland, to come under the hammer in recent months.
The land was previously owned by property developer Westbuild (Reading) Ltd, the developer responsible for building homes in the area. It was sold with existing covenants in place.
A leading Wokingham real estate agent said it’s unusual to see roads being sold at auctions.
A spokesperson for Wokingham Borough Council said: “The road is an adopted highway, which means that the council is responsible for all maintenance.
“It is not uncommon for the land on which there are highway rights to be owned by others, however, the highway rights trump any ownership.”
