An alleged incident of shoplifting last weekend has outraged a visitor to the town who witnessed the event.
The woman, who declined to be named, contacted Wokingham Today to share her shock at what she saw last weekend.
She said: “I popped into the Co-op on London Road, and there was a large man stealing meat.
“When I shouted out, he just walked out of the shop.
“The poor man behind the counter couldn’t do a thing.
“Surely we can’t let this carry on.”
A spokesperson for the Co-op declined to comment on an individual incident.
In a statement to Wokingham Today, the company said: “We are urging communities to write to their Police and Crime Commissioner and urge them to commit to tackling the crime that affects all retailers, and is a blight on communities.”
“The retail industry has seen an unprecedented rise in retail crime driven by repeat and prolific offenders, and shoplifting and theft is often a flashpoint for violence, abuse and anti-social behaviour.
“Retail crime affects all retailers, and it is not a petty and victimless crime.”
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police spokesperson, said: “If you’ve witnessed, or been the victim of crime, please report it to us.
“Shoplifting has a significant impact and is far from being a victimless crime.
“We are absolutely committed to tackling retail crime and supporting the business community in Wokingham.”
