Easthampstead Golf Club welcomed the sons of two of its founding members during the Seniors’ Open Day competition earlier this month.
This special occasion was orchestrated by Ali Smith, club president and curator/historian, as part of his research for a forthcoming book on the club’s history.
Ali successfully located and met David Manson and John O’Neil, the sons of two founding members, and invited them to visit the club, catch up with current members and play in the club’s Seniors’ Open.
Both accepted the invitation, with David agreeing to compete in the tournament and John offering to be his caddy.
With Father’s Day on the horizon, the gathering provided to be a poignant opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the club’s founders.
Their initial vision has flourished over 50 years, transforming into a prestigious establishment that continues to provide thousands of local golfers access to one of the best clubs in Berkshire. The two sons were deeply moved as they reconnected with old acquaintances and witnessed their fathers’ enduring legacy being celebrated by golfers who may have never met them.
The event highlighted the lasting impact that dedicated fathers can have, showcasing the significant contributions of the club’s pioneers.
In a fitting tribute, David Manson claimed the prize for the highest visitor score, adding to the day’s celebrations.
“We are thrilled to have honoured the contributions of our founding members during this special event,” said Adam Brash, current captain of Easthampstead Golf Club.
“The participation of David and John was a wonderful reminder of the club’s rich history and the enduring legacy of its founders.”
Since its formation, Easthampstead Golf Club has always been known as a friendly and inclusive club which has gone from strength to strength.
It will soon be announcing details of celebrations and commemorative events throughout 2025 for its 50th Anniversary, as well as the publication of Ali Smith’s club history book.
