A village horticultural show is offering an English summer afternoon of fruit, vegetable and cookery competitions – along with cream teas, beer and wine in an orchard.
Hurst Horticultural Show will take place on Saturday, August 30, and attracts entrants and visitors from a wide area including Wokingham, Bracknell and Maidenhead.
Show secretary Frank Whittaker said: “This popular show is not just about Hurst. We welcome everyone to take part, entering an exhibit or coming to marvel at the displays, all in a relaxed atmosphere.
“There`s live music from EMC Jazz Band, hot food, stalls with local crafts and the famous Hurst alpacas.
“An auction of vegetables, fruit and cut flowers at crazily low prices takes place at the end of the show.
“These days the show is much broader than pure horticulture with over half of entries spread amongst cooking, baking, preserves, handicrafts, art, photography…and even scarecrows.
“There are medals to be won in the popular children’s classes.
“The show, our 112th, is deliberately kept non-commercial and friendly with low prices. When a surplus is made, most of it is given to local charities.
“Last year, £3,000 was donated.”
The event at Hurst Village Hall in School Road, opens at 12.30pm. Entries must be staged from 8am until 10.30am.
