A WOKINGHAM charity creating orchards and growing spaces in the borough, will be able to create five more gardens, thanks to a grant of £5,000 from Wokingham United Charities.
Freely Fruity’s aim is to plant more fruit for people to enjoy in local communities for free, and to reduce their carbon footprint as they do it.
The grant from Wokingham United Charities will be used for five community garden projects in Wokingham.
Matt Knight, Co-founder of Freely Fruity, said: “Freely Fruity has been working in the local area since 2020.
“None of this would have been possible without the kind generosity of local organisations funding our projects.
“We are hugely grateful to Wokingham United Charities and Berkshire Community Foundation.
“This grant will enable us to continue our vital work in the surrounding areas for the next year.
“We work alongside our partner agencies to construct growing areas on their property, and then demonstrate how to best utilise the space.
“Projects usually involve building raised beds, constructing storage areas, supplying tools, seeds and plants, and providing expertise to help people farm their plots efficiently.”
The Wokingham Charity began in 2020, when through the pandemic Freely Fruity propagated and planted apple trees in the borough.
Creating community orchards and gardens, they continue to bring people together to learn how to maintain, tend and harvest apples and other produce.
They also collaborate with schools, community groups, and borough, town, and parish councils.
Their work is helping to feed people, creating community and improving communities’ health and wellbeing.
