Wokingham borough council’s work started at the junction of Easthampstead Road and Heathlands Road on Monday, November 17, with three-way lights in place for four weeks.
Since then, it has received reports about the increase to journey times. People have also asked if there is a fault with the lights.
The lights were checked regularly to make sure there was not a problem, but in the last few days it spotted a fault and worked quickly to source an alternative that will be more reliable.
These will be in place from November 27, and should significantly improve the traffic flow in this area.
A spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused until now.
“To further help ease congestion in this area, we would remind everyone to follow the official diversion route.
“Some drivers are going through red lights illegally, which causes the junction to be blocked and creates delays.”
Work remains on track to be complete by mid-December, ahead of further work from early next year.
It’s part of the wider South Wokingham Distributor Road project, which provides a key access route for new homes and other infrastructure.
