THERE is no denying the beaming faces on this week’s front page picture – the Sumas are delighted that they can finally return home.
Over the past few seasons Wokingham & Emmbrook FC have been rather nomadic, playing some home fixtures away, ground sharing and generally getting by.
At the same time, its youth work has continued to prove incredibly popular with the Lowther Road pitches packed with youngsters keen to get their name on the scoresheet.
The Sumas, like the borough’s other non-league teams, are important parts of our community. And we share in their delight that finally the enhancements and improvements to their ground can go ahead and the team can look forward to playing home fixtures at home, at last.
We also know that the club is keen to be a good neighbour. We understand some residents’ concerns over light pollution from floodlights and noise.
But these games – always over by 10pm (unless there’s penalties) – will be once every so often and there won’t be the type of crowds that the Royals will attract.
This is a wonderful win for Wokingham and we look forward to the Sumas’ first home game at home.
Congratulations.
