VOTE 2019: Newcomer James Sunderland holds Bracknell for Conservatives

BRACKNELL has remained a Conservative seat after newcomer James Sunderland won the seat in the general election.

His 31,894 votes meant that he comfortably beat Labour candidate Paul Bidwell, who secured 12,065 votes.

The Lib Dem candidate Kaweh Beheshtizadeh came third with 7,749 votes.

Green party candidate Derek Florey was fourth with 2,089 votes and independent candidate Olivio Barreto had 553 votes.

Mr Sunderland was appointed by the Bracknell Conservatives to the seat after Dr Phillip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats.

His total number of votes was down by almost 1,000 votes on Dr Lee’s 2017 votes – he got 32,882.

When he was announced as a candidate, Mr Sunderland said: “We are living at a time of uncertainty, with disillusionment and division at the heart of our political system. Resolution will require proven leadership, loyalty and integrity of the highest calibre, at both national and local level. I am thrilled to have been selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bracknell and I will work hard to regain the seat for the Conservative Party.

“Only the Conservatives will continue to deliver the best deal for the area and I am proud to have a great team behind me. It is also imperative that we secure an outright Conservative majority in Parliament in order to get Brexit done as Bracknell has so much to gain from exciting new worldwide trade deals and shared wealth for all. And we have other great policies too including 20,000 new Police on our streets, extra money for our fantastic NHS and extra funding for our superb schools.
