NEWLY elected Stephen Newton is delighted to be picking up the baton from Lib Dem Tahir Maher, who stood down in this election.
Cllr Newton has served the party in a number of roles in recent years and is now taking on a new role as member for Maiden Erlegh following Mr Maher’s decision to step down.
And he won with a 127-vote majority over his rival, Conservative Tim Holton.
“I’m really pleased,” the new Cllr Newton said shortly after signing the paperwork as a new councillor.
“I’ve got a long association with the Maiden Erlegh ward, and have a lot of friends who live there.
“I’m really looking forward to working with residents’ associations, churches, and other groups, as well as schools.”
He added: “I will be a councillor for everybody.
“I want to really represent the ward and hope that everyone will recognise I’m doing a good job for them, whether they voted for me or not.”
He thanked people who did vote for him, for placing their trust in him.
“I always think a councillor is not above the residents. Instead, you’re a servant,” he explained.
“I will try and serve the people in whatever way I can and help make their lives, and Maiden Erlegh, a better place.”
