A WOKINGHAM charity is celebrating after hearing that it has been named Charity of the Year by Thames Valley Business and Community Awards.
The Link Visiting Scheme, which promotes friendship and connection for older people through its activities, projects and befriending services, beat 54 other nominees to win the award at a ceremony at The Hilton, Reading on Friday.
And it turned out to be an exceptional night for the charity, when it was revealed that it is also a finalist in the Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award.
Marjie Walker, the charity’s CEO, said: “We are absolutely thrilled.
“The award is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our fantastic staff team, our committed volunteers, and our incredible supporters.
“A huge thank you to every single person who contributes to our mission of tackling loneliness with friendship.”
Thames Valley Business & Community Awards highlight and recognise entrepreneurs, businesses, charities and community figures from the region who are changing their industries, the economy and society in original and positive ways.
In explaining their decision, they said: “The Link’s initiative has significantly transformed the local community by connecting more than 1,000 older adults with dedicated volunteers.
“This endeavor has not only alleviated loneliness but has also bolstered the overall well-being of numerous individuals.
“Through these efforts, The Link has been instrumental in fostering a more inclusive and connected Wokingham Borough.”
Fundraising manager for The Link Liz McDaniel said: “It’s such exciting news.
“To every single person who has contributed to our mission – thank you.
“And a special thank you to Blandy & Blandy Solicitors, too, who made it possible for us to attend the award ceremony.
