THE BOROUGH saddled up for a day of cycling at the weekend.
This year’s Wokingham Bikeathon brought families and friends together for an organised bike ride that offered a choice of four routes.
The event, which took place at Cantley Park on Sunday, is designed to suit all ages and abilities, with circuits taking in quiet lanes and beautiful Berkshire countryside.
Cyclists could choose between a short cycle of 15 miles, an intermediate run of 26 miles, a long circuit of 36 miles, or an extra long one, new this year, of 51 miles.
And Kidical Mass, a children’s bike ride, was also available for younger cyclists.
Chris Easton, assistant director of highways and transport, said: “It was a pleasure to support another successful Wokingham Bikeathon, especially in such wonderful weather, and most importantly I’d like to thank and congratulate the organisers for all their hard work.
“We’re proud to play a part in this fantastic, volunteer-led event as it goes from strength to strength.
“It truly offers something for everyone, from our borough’s youngest cyclists in the Kidical Mass ride to the dedicated grown-ups who take on the longer routes.
“There was a fantastic atmosphere as usual on the event field, with lots of opportunities for cyclists to brush up on their skills – whether tackling an obstacle course, getting anti-theft advice from the police or learning some fun and helpful local routes with our My Journey Wokingham team.
“Where possible, it’s vital for people’s health and the environment to walk or cycle instead of driving – especially for shorter trips.
“We value the Wokingham Bikeathon enormously because it helps our residents to pick up those habits for life, and to do so safely.”
The Bikeathon team thanks everyone who supported, sponsored, volunteered, and worked on the event, as well as all the ‘amazing participants’, and they look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
