Sports Person of the Year, sponsored by Bathroom Concepts, winner: Nigel King
Local hockey stalwart Nigel King was selected as this year’s Sports person of the Year, sponsored by Bathroom Concepts.
Nick has lived in Wokingham borough for more than 30 years and has been involved in both Bracknell Hockey Club and Wokingham Hockey club before overseeing the merger which saw them become South Berkshire Hockey Club.
Speaking after collecting his award, Nigel said: “It was such a shock. I really wasn’t expecting that at all, it was such a pleasant surprise.
“For many years I played for Bracknell Hockey Club and then joined Wokingham Hockey Club.
“About 10 years ago they decided to merge so I got involved as club secretary and I continued to play as regularly as possible, those days of playing regularly stopped a few years ago.
“So a couple of years ago I started up the walking hockey section which we do every Thursday at Cantley Park.
“It’s great to get everyone involved, we have a number of people who are able to keep playing because of walking hockey and play the game they enjoy.
“We’ve had a number of new people who have joined who had never played hockey before to come along and join us. We have a great crowd of various age ranges, male and female. It’s great fun.”
