WOKINGHAM Foodbank is teaming up with Tesco for their In-store Pre-Packed Donation Bags Event to support a growing need for emergency food in the UK.
In July and August, shoppers can pick up pre-filled donation bags at Tesco to help support people in crisis.
Karamjit Nijjar, Communication Manager at Wokingham Foodbank said: “We know that the summer holidays can be a really difficult time for families experiencing financial hardship.
“No-one should need to turn to a charity for something as essential as food, and as we work towards achieving the long-term change needed, Tesco’s support this summer will make a real difference to families across Wokingham.”
People can support the scheme at Wokingham Tesco store any day from Monday, July 21, until Sunday, August 31.
There they can pick up a pre-packed donation bag, and after paying for the items, can drop it off at the in-store collection point.
Across the UK, more than one in five people live below the poverty line.
Foodbanks in the Trussell Trust network provided more than 2.9 million emergency food parcels last year, more than 1 million of them for children.
In the last 12 months alone, Wokingham Foodbank has given out 4,500 emergency food parcels, over 2000 of which were for children.
More than half the people it supports have been struggling with the rising cost of living.
A small gesture from one shopper can mean the world to a family in crisis say the event organisers.
