AS WE remember Victory in Europe Day, first celebrated 80 years ago, a group of borough crafters have been making beautiful and poignant crocheted memorials of their own.
The Barkham Hookers, well known locally for their hand-made poppy badges, post box toppers and crocheted Christmas trees, have been hard at work again.
Now they reveal their latest works of woolen art.
Gaynor White, who leads the group said: “ A small group of women from Arborfield, and I, have been busy working on these toppers and VE Decorations for a few months.”
The crafters have decorated the village’s war memorial and Londis and Barkham Post Office postboxes with crimson red creations, and with tiny armed forces figurines, that will surely not go unnoticed.
Put up on Tuesday morning, they will help visitors to Arborfield to reflect not only on the joy experienced by the nation that first VE Day, but also to remember the many lives lost to give people today the freedom we enjoy.
The Barkham Hookers enjoy sharing their work, but also use their crafting talents to raise considerable funds for charity.
