A PROTEST highlighting the funding cuts facing Wokingham’s schools paraded through the town centre last month.
Dozens of parents and children marched through the streets of Wokingham on Friday, May 26, carrying banners and blowing whistles to get their message of fair funding for all schools across.
The School Assembly event was part of a national day of protest, which saw more than 50 demonstrations take place across the country.
Local parent and campaigner Annabel Yoxall said: “Our School Assembly was held as part of a nationally coordinated event with the Fair Funding For All Schools campaign.
“There was great community support with all [Wokingham constituency] candidates also invited to attend. We were very pleased that Cllr Andy Croy and Cllr Clive Jones were able to come and join us.
“The event gave us an opportunity to hear directly from the children about the impact of the cutbacks. They expressed their concerns about losing their teachers and subjects from the curriculum. We assured them that there are many people working really hard to sort out proper funding.”
Cllr Croy said: “There has been a fantastic turn-out for the demonstration today, it is important that we keep this campaign at the forefront of people’s minds, especially during election time when it could easily get swept under the rug.”
Cllr Jones added: “It’s been really good to see so many people here, including a number of youngsters who have shown their support.
“This campaign must not be forgotten about, whichever party gets into power on June 8 education funding needs to remain a priority.”
