AROUND 40 members of a borough fundraising group met to enjoy a festive meal and entertainment.
Members and guests of Wokingham Probus Club gathered to share Christmas lunch at Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell.
“The Christmas atmosphere was enhanced by beautiful table decorations made by one of our members,” said Wokingham Probus member David Hunter.
“Everyone enjoyed the delicious traditional turkey and Christmas pudding meal, which was rounded off with mince pies and coffee.
“Then we were entertained by David Allen, a professional speaker and Dickens expert who, clad in tailcoat and cravat, took us through Charles Dickens’s eventful life from poverty to become a world-renowned author and theatrical entertainer.”
Readings from his novel A Christmas Carol completed the festive scene.
Probus clubs provide opportunities for retired or semi-retired professional and business people (both men and women) to meet socially.
Wokingham Probus members are able to enjoy social gatherings, lunch and a talk on a subject of general interest at their monthly meetings.
Talks cover a wide range of topics, and are chosen to be informative and entertaining.
In 2026 members can expect to enjoy discussing subjects that include: Edward and Mrs Simpson, The Battle of Britain, 18th century theatrical scandal, and hypnotism.
In between monthly meetings the club organises a book reading group, theatre visits and outings for afternoon tea.
New members are always welcome, and people are invited to email the club secretary to enquire about coming along to a monthly meeting.
Wokingham Probus Club meets at Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell, on the first Wednesday of the month, from 12.30pm.
