Wokingham went crumbs last Friday morning as a deluge of cake brought out plenty of smiles … and raised thousands for Macmillan Cancer Care.
The annual charity coffee morning saw florists, cafes, pubs, offices and banks all host fundraising events.
And hundreds took part in their own Great Wokingham Bake Off, creating beautiful cakes of all shapes and sizes and also suitable for all tastes and waistlines.
Parents from WHEATFIELD SCHOOL in Winnersh held a coffee morning on Thursday, September 28, bringing in a selection of tasty treats to enjoy. The school also held a cupcake colouring competition. Pupils paid £1 to enter, with money going to Macmillan. It was won by Archie from the Kandinsky class with Kate from O’Keefe class voted as runner-up.
The school raised an incredible £406 for Macmillan Cancer Care.
FUNKY FLOWERS in London Road, Wokingham held their coffee morning outside their store and offer some orchid plants for sale as well. Although store owner Kate Thomas is a qualified patisserie chef as well as a florist, it was her team that made all the cakes.
The event raised £200.
Ms Thomas said: “It’s a lot more than last year and a lot of people came.”
BARCLAYS BANK in Wokingham’s Market Place invited customers to have sticky fingers: but the only raiding that took place was the cakes on the cake table.
A chocolate cola cake was one of the treats baked by staff from EDEN LOUNGE in Peach Street.
The team had been up until the early hours to prepare for the event. Treats included chocolate caramel cakes, a banana loaf and healthy chocolate and avocado brownies.
Jay Cutler and Becky Waas helped organised a bingo event at THE TWO POPLARS in Easthampstead Road. Visitors were able to go eyes down while also paying £1 to guess the number of sweets in a jar.
MURDOCH HOUSE CARE HOME, in Murdoch Road, welcomed Town Mayor, Cllr Peter Lucey to their coffee morning on Thursday, September 28, which raised more than £150 for Macmillan.
Home Manager Christine Tyrrell said: “This year we invited the Mayor of Wokingham Peter Lucey, and along with families, friends, residents and staff who enjoyed the homemade cakes, we raised over £150 for such a good cause.
“Our residents, who range from 105 years old to 77 years old, enjoyed taking part in the coffee morning, they like helping others who are less fortunate than themselves.”
HOLME GRANGE CRAFT VILLAGE retailers got into the spirit of the day, with many holding cake sales outside their shops, and The Grange Chocolate Cafe held two special Cake Bingo sessions. The cafe alone raised £275.
Coffee mornings were held at THE CRISPIN and THE DUKE’S HEAD in Denmark Street, with punters swapping pints for hot drinks.
Year 6 at WAVERLEY SCHOOL hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning for the whole school. Hot chocolate and cupcakes were served in exchange for a donation at break time.
And THE BRADBURY CENTRE in Rose Street also welcomed visitors wanting to help the charity.
Fun events were also held at HARE HATCH SHEEPLANDS plant nursery and EMMA’S KITCHEN in Twyford.
