Wokingham Town’s first competitive match for more than 20 years, against Binfield in the extra preliminary round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup, will also see a battle for silverware of a different kind.
The Martin Joyce Memorial Trophy, currently held by Binfield, is up for grabs wherever the two teams play each other.
Martin played for, and captained, both sides in the 1960s before being killed in a road traffic accident in 1967.
The game is especially poignant for Wokingham Town president Mark Ashwell. His wife, Sue, was Martin’s niece.
He will present the trophy to the winning side on Saturday afternoon.
As well as seeking to progress in this year’s FA Cup, Wokingham Town will be looking for revenge for the 2-0 win that Binfield inflicted on the Sumas at Lowther Road in the same competition last season.
That match attracted what was a record crowd of 604 for the Emmbrook venue.
Saturday’s match at Binfield’s Iconic Stadium in Hill Farm Lane kicks-off at 12.30pm.
This match will also be the first since Binfield FC became a cashless venue.
The winners will receive £1,125 in prize money, with the losers taking home £375.
