WOKINGHAM Theatre’s production of The Watsons completely sold out, to the delight of its members.
Before the show even opened, each of its 10 performances was booked to capacity, and will entertain audiences with the sparkling story of an unfinished Jane Austen novel.
A clever mix of Regency and modern, The Watsons is a romp of a story to tickle the funny bones of every Austen lover.
Written by playwright Laura Wade it playfully explores what happens when a writer loses the plot.
Herione Emma Watson is 19 and new in town.
Having been cut off by her rich aunt, she has been returned to the family home.
To avoid poverty and spinsterhood, she and her sisters must marry, and fast.
But to whom? The charming cad, the awkward lord, the clergyman?
You know the story…
Only, in this instance, you don’t – know one actually knows, because Jane Austen began, but never finished, her novel.
It has been left to Laura Wade to tell that story.
Director Hedda Bird said: “I’ll be amazed if our audiences aren’t surprised by this show.
“It’s such great fun, and I really think they’ll have a ball.
“I love that it’s both Jane Austen, and completely and utterly not Jane Austen.
“We’ve a big cast of 20 actors, with children, dancing, battles, and live music, so there’s lots to enjoy.
“The two children in the show, both members of Wokingham Youth Theatre, who take it in turns to play one of the roles, are terrific.”

Hedda is particularly pleased that the production brings together players from across the generations, and embraces both new actors and seasoned performers.
“We have a wonderful range of ages in the show,” she said, “and lots of new players in this production, men and women, along with actors who’ve performed here many times.
“The most senior member of our cast has many decades of performing behind her.
“I feel there’s something really very special about bringing together all generations in theatre.
“Everyone comes together to make theatre here, and that’s something to celebrate.”
