A GRANT of £5,000 will help to get borough children into a comfortable bed.
Thanks to support from Wokingham United Charities, First Days Children’s Charity can support 300 families whose children need a safe place to sleep.
Monica, fundraising, marketing and communications officer for the organisation, said: “We’re very grateful for the Tackling Poverty grant awarded to us.
“It will cover one day a week of our family support worker for one year, and the work required to assess applications for beds and bedding.
It will help us to get beds into the homes of 300 children throughout the year.”
The group’s support team offers a friendly, non-judgemental service for local families to reach out to when they need help.
“Our Safe Place to Sleep project ensures that children from birth to 18 years have a safe bed to sleep in, said Monica.
“We provide new mattresses and a mix of preloved and new bed frames and bedding.
“Children who don’t have a safe place to sleep are more likely to be fatigued, anxious, have higher rates of mental ill health and do less well at school.
“By providing children with a bed we mitigate this risk, and help prevent parents from getting into debt.”
First Days Children’s Charity gives choice, restores dignity and empowers families living with a low income or experiencing financial hardship.
The organisation offers peer support and one to one coaching to parents, and everyday essentials for children who need them, including: school uniforms, new baby essentials, beds and bedding, travel equipment, toiletries, safety items, furniture, toys, and books.
