Wokingham has been named among the UK’s happiest places to live, according to a lifestyle feature published by HELLO! magazine.
A Berkshire market town, already known for its strong community spirit and quality of life, was highlighted in the magazine’s nationwide round-up celebrating towns and cities offering residents a high standard of living, green spaces and good connectivity.
HELLO! described Wokingham as “pretty” with “friendly people” and praised its blend of modern development and traditional architecture. The magazine also noted the town’s strong transport links, including easy access to Reading, London and Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
Wokingham continues to experience steady population growth, driven in part by new housing developments and its reputation as a family-friendly area.
According to the 2021 Census, Wokingham Borough is home to around 177,500 people, with the town itself accounting for more than 38,000 residents. The population is expected to exceed 200,000 in the next decade.
Green spaces
The feature also cited Wokingham’s abundance of nearby parks and nature reserves as key contributors to its wellbeing rankings. Popular local destinations include:
– Dinton Pastures Country Park, a 335-acre site known for its lakes and walking routes
– California Country Park, offering woodlands, wildlife and family-friendly facilities
– Cantley Park and Elms Field, both close to the town centre
– Popes Meadow, a well-used green space for dog walkers and families
These spaces, combined with the borough’s wider countryside, were highlighted as factors helping residents stay active and connected to nature.

HELLO! also pointed to the strength of the local property market.
Wokingham’s average house prices remain above the national average, supported by high demand from families and commuters. The magazine noted that while prices can be “steep”, the town’s location and amenities continue to attract buyers and renters.
Community and Events
Wokingham regularly hosts community events that reinforce its reputation as a sociable and engaged town. Annual favourites include the Wokingham Children’s Book Festival, REME Freedom Parade, town centre summer events, and the Torchlight Procession and Fireworks, all of which draw thousands of visitors.

Local residents have welcomed the latest recognition. Many say the award reflects a long-standing sense of community, supported by strong schools, low crime rates and ongoing investment in the town centre.
Wokingham Borough Council said the town’s inclusion in the list “highlights the qualities that make the area such a desirable place to live, work and raise a family.”
