Hundreds of residents and visitors flocked to Wokingham town centre over the weekend to celebrate Lunar New Year, marking the Year of the Horse with a host of cultural activities and performances.
Organised by local community groups and supported by Wokingham town council, the free event transformed the town’s streets with vibrant red and gold decorations, colours symbolising good fortune and joy.
The festivities began on Sunday morning with a traditional lion dance, drawing applause from families and passers-by as performers danced through the crowd to the beat of drums and cymbals.
Market Place became the focal point of the celebrations, hosting craft stalls, calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese New Year food vendors offering dumplings, bao buns and sweet treats. Children took part in lantern-making workshops, while adults enjoyed tea-tasting sessions and a programme of live music featuring traditional instruments.
The celebrations continued into the afternoon with performances by local dance troupes, bringing the weekend to a colourful and joyful close, and setting positive wishes for the year ahead.
