CAMPAIGNERS targeted commuters returning to work after the Christmas break as a rail fare kicked in.
On Wednesday, January 2, Labour councillors visited stations in the borough to hand out special copies of a campaign newspaper highlighting the party’s opposition to the 3.1% increase in ticket prices.
Protesters included the councillors for Bulmershe and Whitegates, Andy Croy, and Norreys Ward, Rachel Burgess.
The duo stood outside Wokingham station between 6.30am and 8.30am to catch the first commuters of the new year, helped by two other party members.
And in Earley, commuters also greeted by party members as part of the nationwide demonstration.
“The average cost of rail travel has increased at more than three times the rate of wages. Time to stop this Tory rip-off,” said Cllr Burgess.
And Cllr Croy said that Labour wanted to introduce a cap on rail prices and also “prevent the railway services being creamed off into private ownership”.
