A BOROUGH music group is bringing Christmas sounds to Wokingham this weekend, to make a joyful sound, and to raise money for youngsters in Nairobi and Uganda.
A concert of carols and festive music from South Berkshire Singers (SBS) will see the choir join with young voices from St Teresa’s Catholic Academy Chamber Choir, to perform a programme of well-known and loved Christmas music.
Audience members will be able to sing along with carols, and to enjoy listening to works including from John Rutter, Will Todd, Bob Chilcott, and a Christmas Cantata.
Keyboard accompaniment will be performed by Simon Dinsdale.
Since their summer concert held at Holme Grange School, when musical director Karen Phillips retired, South Berkshire Singers have been working with their new musical director Kate Walker to prepare for their December concert.
“More than 200 people attended our July concert, ‘Midsummer Music’,” said choir member Dave Donaldson, “and we raised £3,000.”
The amount was for the Royal Berkshire Charity (specifically the Acute Stroke Unit), and the money raised will go towards refurbishing and improving the unit.
“We also entertained the residents of Acorn Drive at their Harvest Supper in October,” he added, “and we’ll be visiting them again in December.”
Interval refreshments at the Christmas concert will be served by volunteers from Corpus Christi Church Committee.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Corpus Christi Africa Fund (CCAF) to support children in need at Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School in Nairobi, and at SUUBI Orphanage near Entebbe, Uganda.
To hear the two choirs sing, people should make their way to Corpus Christi Church, Wokingham, on Sunday, December 7, at 4pm.
Tickets cost £5 for adults and are free for children (but for seating purposes children still require a ticket).
The event is very popular, so people are asked to buy their tickets beforehand, from choir members, or by emailing: [email protected]
South Berkshire Singers meet every Tuesday evening at All Saints School in Wokingham.
